What is Davis Hoops?

Davis Hoops Basketball Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of competitive youth basketball for both boys and girls in Davis and surrounding areas. This past year the club had fourteen teams including boys and girls teams. At the core of each team are the club principles of Respect, Integrity and Pride.

Players from the 5th grade to 8th grade are invited to join a team after completing competitive tryouts. Teams may enter league play and/or participate in weekend tournaments.

All Davis Hoops coaches are required to complete the Davis Hoops Basketball Club Coaching Licensure Course.  Coaches are encouraged to attend coaching seminars and skill development clinics as well.

Once a year, Davis Hoops holds the Annual Plant Sale Fundraiser. This event allows the club to offer scholarships to players who would otherwise be unable to participate. Each team also has fundraising events to help offset the costs of participation.

Davis Hoops also hosts the Davis Hoops Annual All Star Basketball Camp featuring NBA stars as speakers and guest coaches. The camp stress fundamental development and provides competitive games for players ages 6-17.

Davis Hoops Basketball Club Q & A

Q: What is Davis Hoops?
A:
Davis Hoops is a boys and girls competitive AAU basketball club that was formed seven years ago in an attempt to provide area youth the opportunity to play high-level, quality basketball.

Q: How are teams selected?
A:
Tryouts are held in September/October for all teams (except 13u which forms after the Jr. High basketball season). Each team will hold at least three tryout sessions, and players are encouraged to attend as many as they can. If a team has openings, tryouts may occur during the season as well.

To determine which team you should try out for, please see the AAU age calculator.

Players are selected based on a number of criteria. Some talented players may not be chosen because a team, for example, might not need 5 point guards. The number of teams in a specific age division depends on the number of coaches available. Last season, many grade levels had two teams with between 8 and 10 players per team.

Q: How long does the season last?
A:
Our program runs from the completion of tryouts until the following summer. Some teams choose to play throughout the summer, while others end by May. While we are looking for players who are serious about playing at a more competitive level than recreational basketball, we understand that players may be involved in more than one sport. We will try to accommodate those players and respect their other sport programs.

Q: Where are games played?
A:
Each team decides whether to participate in leagues, scrimmages, and/or tournaments. League games are played in Sacramento. Scrimmages are either in Davis, Dixon or the Sac. Area. Tournaments are played in the Greater Sacramento area, as far south as Stockton and as far west as Fairfield. Some older teams have chosen to play in Reno. Most of the events are AAU-sanctioned games.

Q: Who are the coaches?
A:
Davis Hoops coaches are selected from individuals who have expressed interest, passed reference checks, demonstrated knowledge of the game and successfully completed our Coaching Licensure Course. Davis Hoops coaches acknowledge their role as teachers and are encouraged to create a positive learning environment. Please see our webpage for more about our coaches.

Q: What about practices?
A:
Practices are held twice a week--though on tournament weekends, teams might only practice once. Harper Jr. High, Holmes Jr. High, and Emerson Jr. High gyms in Davis are used for team practices.

Q: What are the costs involved?
A:
Registration is $300 per player per year. The yearly registration fee is non-refundable and covers the registration process (Davis Hoops and AAU registration), Davis Hoops administrative costs, gym rentals, equipment costs and insurance. Uniforms run $65 and are used for two years. League and tournament fees are spread out over the season and may run $100-$300 per year. The cost of leagues and tournaments is often significantly offset by team fundraising activities. Scholarships may be awarded to players as needed.
