Davis Hoops' Philosophy
This club philosophy represents the views of the coaches and each player is asked to make a commitment to these principles:
Priorities
A team or individual without priorities is like a ship at sea in a storm without a compass. Priorities help us stay focused on what is really important in our lives.
Our first priority is our family. Long after involvement with this team has passed, your family will still be there. It is important to recognize and acknowledge the support and commitment you receive from your family. You spend a great deal of time at school, practice and at games. It is important to spend time with your family to maintain and strengthen the bonds.
The second priority is school. Your academic performance will open many more doors and have a far greater significance in your life than will your participation on this team. We would like this team to be distinguished not only for its athletic ability on the court, but also, it's academic performance in the classroom. We would challenge every one on the team to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.
The third priority is basketball. Each player should remember that while it is important for you to be a part of this team, it is a privilege. We expect that until we have played our last game as a team, we will grow as a family, supporting and sacrificing. We will stay focused on the fact that "we" are a team, not "I" am a team. There may be games when playing time is not equal, but "we" will succeed together. Players will be asked to assume a certain role on the team. Whether you are asked to be a rebounder, defender, or scorer you will be contributing to the success of the team. All roles are equally important in the coach's eyes. Good players have terrific basketball skills. Great players not only have the skills but also make everyone around them better. We want this team to be characterized, by great players.
Community Service
Your local community supports you in many ways and therefore, this team. You will be asked, as a team, to give some of your time back to the community in appreciation for their support. This may come in the form of participation in youth basketball clinics or charitable work at one of the city's institutions.
Work Habits
The coaches have donated a significant amount of time in the preparation and execution of practices. What we expect in return from the players is maximum effort and focus. We expect that no player will dwell on how good he/she is but will always strive to be better, and never feel he/she has reached his/her best. Practice effort will exceed that of a league or tournament game; "you play the way you practice". Each player must recognize that each drill at practice has a purpose and that the coaches will often correct a fundamental part of your game. Your ability to focus and make those corrections may determine your playing time. We expect that each player will live up to the expectations of players.
Team Reputation
Your acceptance of the invitation to be a member of this team carries with it a responsibility to uphold the reputation of the team and Davis Hoops. We want this team to be characterized by its family, academic, and athletic excellence. You will be expected to demonstrate the elements of the team code both on and off the court. Win or lose, we will congratulate the opposing team on their effort after each game. If we knock a player down we will make an effort to help them up in a sportsmanship manner. Foul language will not be tolerated on this team on or off the court, at practice or in games. Our legacy will be described as "outstanding" and "excellent". We will be a team that sets the standards and that will be remembered for years to come.
