Ryan's Letter

Ryan played on Coach George Sousa's basketball team for three years before deciding to focus on another sport, and not try out for the 2008 Davis Hoops team. the letter that Ryan sent to his former coach informing him of his decision to not try out for the team is a testament to Ryan's character and it exempifies what Davis Hoops endeavors to instill in all players.

Dear Coach George,

I will not be trying out for the Davis Hoops. This was a very hard decision for me to make. I want to thank all my coaches, parents, and teammates for everything they have done for me.

Coach George: Thanks for giving me a chance to play and get better. Thanks for teaching me how to play organized basketball, and about the epitome of discipline. Thanks for pushing me to have the confidence to take the open shot. I find myself extremely lucky to be able to compete at this level. I will always remember when you let me play on the A-Team, despite my ability.

Coach Steve: I am very grateful for having you as a coach. I have listed some principles that I have learned: "The ball is the most important thing", "Defense is all about effort", "How to beat a team that is better than you", "How to actuate the team by diving on the floor for loose balls and taking charges." I will always remember the charge band you gave me after one of my games.

Coach Chris: I very much appreciate your help and coaching. Thanks for perfecting or improving my shooting ability and for explaining to me what I needed to do on the court to achieve success next time I played. I really appreciated the time after practice, when you stayed to help fix my shot, in such a way that the ball would rotate consistently.

Coach Doug: Thanks for helping me calm down during a game or practice. Thanks for believing in me and encouraging me to play "my game".

Coach Craig: Thanks for listening to all my questions and, no matter the intensity of practice, to have fun.

Wildcat Parents: Thanks for cheering us on every game, giving us rides, feeding us, and funding the team. With your support, the experience was even more enjoyable.

Teammates: Thanks for accepting me into the team from the start. No matter how I played in practice or in a game, no one made fun of me or put me down when I was struggling.

The Davis Hoops Program has changed my whole perspective of the game. I now have more respect for it and watch it with different eyes. I have played many sports, however while at Davis Hoops I learned how to perform at the same level despite the adverse conditions. The attributes I have learned have already helped me in school and will continue to help me later in life. Good luck with your upcoming season and beat YBA and Lodi!

Sincerely,
Ryan
